Some of our BESS work

Since 2015 Greenwood’s been at the forefront of renewable energy, deploying some of Australia’s most ambitious projects. Including large-scale BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) across the country - these are their stories.

100+MWh of BESS under our belts

As part of showcasing each BESS, we’ll cover challenges faced. Problem-solving techniques employed. And, of course, highlights straight from our People’s mouths!

Growing NEED for BESS

As Australia transitions toward a renewable future, the demand for battery energy storage systems has surged. Especially in remote and grid-stressed areas, who rely more on BESS than ever to improve energy reliability and reduce the cost of living.

Greenwood has helped to address this increasing demand and support local economies in the process. These systems providing a dependable and sustainable energy backbone for diverse community needs, from retirement villages to large-scale industrial sites.

BESS Project 1

2.5 MWh BESS / FCAS (Dromana)

This BESS was designed primarily to provide Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS), which play a crucial role in stabilising the grid. FCAS involves maintaining the frequency of the electrical power system within a predetermined range, ensuring stable and reliable energy.

Pre-Construction of our Solar Farm - The developer xxxx process  took xxxxxx (DA)

Upon successful submissions of. xxx , Greenwood commenced the design of solar farms in Kootingal, Gunnedah and five other townships in regional NSW.

The first solar farm Greenwood designed was in Kootingal, NSW - a 25-minute drive from Tamworth airport. We’re now on first name basis with Sixt car rental.

There are certainly uglier places to call your office.

We’re fortunate to be able to work amongst beautiful landscapes and scenes. Waking up to epic canola fields and seeing off the day with star-studded night skies. The land is precious and we ensure to have as little impact on the native flora and fauna we encounter. Consulting specialists and indigenous communities local to the areas we work in the process...

Now it's time to break ground.

Build fencing

The first thing to do was to build fencing around the property.

- 10 meters from the array for fire trucks
- Important to protect wildlife

Key Highlight: The System’s PURPOSE

Aside from the slick cable management, working on a BESS designed for grid stability and incentive eligibility was pretty awesome!

02

KEY HIGHLIGHT: Distinct Requirements

Below the concrete slab supporting the batteries were our cables - routed beneath for a clean look, and efficient design

This project exemplified the team’s dedication to delivering high-performance solutions. And their attention-to-detail - chef's kiss. Nothing but the very BESS.

BSSS Project 2

5.4 MWh BESS in Loxton, South Australia

Just 250 metres from an high-voltage (HV) substation, this BESS required meticulous planning. And the site’s extreme topography posed challenges for the install. Basically, it was a giant battery on a hillside... Perhaps it’s best if Michael explains:

01

Key Highlight: TRICKY Location

Being so close to the HV substation our team needed to take additional precautions and use specialist equipment

02

KEY HIGHLIGHT: ADAPTABILITY

The team had the ability to adapt to site-specific challenges. A testament to their versatility and commitment to delivering solutions tailored to our partner’s needs.

BESS Project 3

Community BESS (Meridian)

This project’s triumph was Greenwood’s seamless integration of 75 solar systems and a 300 kWh battery. Helping power a retirement village’s renewable ambition forward.

Key Highlight: integrated system

Communication between the BESS and 75 standalone homes - and their systems - was essential for operational success

02

KEY HIGHLIGHT: Tough Challenge

It worked! The team ensured smooth and reliable communication between all components critical to the integrated system’s performance

By overcoming complex system communication challenges, Greenwood delivered a cohesive, reliable and sustainable result for the village & its residents.
